Introduction

What is online learning?

Online learning is very similar to the traditional classroom-based education that you are used to.  It consists basically of courses taught over the internet.  Lessons, experiences and communication are all combined into a classroom through the world wide web.  Some classes take place entirely through the internet, while others combine the online experience with the traditional classroom.

Online classes are different from regular classes in some important ways. Online classes are more student self-directed, which can make it harder than the traditional class.  It takes motivation and an active participation to be an online student. The online students must be able to keep up with the course schedule without a teacher looking over their shoulder.  Online courses can also require more time than the average class.  The online student must be aware of the challenging experiences that go along with the virtual classroom.

What are the advantages of online learning?

Online classes offer many benefits to students. Because of busy schedules, geographic distances and health or physical limitations some learners cannot make it to a traditional campus class.  Online courses give them the opportunity to pursue their education with a flexible schedule in an interactive environment.  Students can work on their own pace in their own time yet still have communication access to their instructor and fellow students.  Written communication and interaction is very important in online learning.  Students can expect a very fulfilling, collaborative learning experience.
